COVID-19 update for the building and construction sector

COVID-19 update for the building and construction sector

Yesterday the Government announced that from 11:59pm on Tuesday 31 August, all regions south of the Auckland border will be moving to Alert Level 3 while the Auckland and Northland region will remain in Alert Level 4.

This will be welcome news to the sector as we look to pick up momentum again in the new environment. However, we know that this will present new challenges to businesses where travel between regions is necessary.

Business Travel Register for permitted travel

Travel between regions will be heavily restricted due to the health order. Travel documents that have been previously issued for travel will not be able to be used.

MBIE will open the Business Travel application system for issuing Business Travel Documents for workers undertaking permitted activities only. You can make an application at from 12pm, Sunday 29 August.

It is important that if your business does not meet the criteria for travel, you do not apply. This will ensure that MBIE is able to process timely documents for those businesses who need them for workers to undertake permitted activities.

Working at Alert Level 3

At Alert Level 3, work should be done remotely where possible and businesses are encouraged to use technology to carry out their work as much as they can.

Where working remotely is not possible, on-site work is permitted, with appropriate health and safety measures and physical distancing measures in place for both workers and (where relevant) building occupants.

Building and construction businesses are able toby products and materials from building and construction retailers and suppliers under Alert Level 3, and these businesses will have health and safety and physical distancing measures in place.

Alert Level 4 businesses - please check in with your staff

Businesses in Auckland and Northland who are still under Alert Level 4 are encouraged to ask their staff if anyone in their household has tested positive for COVIE-19 or attended a location of interest.

If a household member has tested positive for COVID-19 or attended a location of interest, the employee must stay at home until the person in the household has received a negative test result.

They should not leave their home for any reason, including going to work, unless directed to by Healthline (eg to get a test).

Prioritised vaccinations for building and construction

Vaccine eligibility has been expanded to include essential workers in nationally important infrastructure roles for New Zealand, for example distribution centre staff in the grocery industry, and electricity and water companies.
