Construction Sector Accord Update
2 July 2020
In this update we are very pleased to be sharing two significant new tools to help the sector adopt good behaviours and principles in line with the Accord.
Find out some of the key learnings from the Accord’s first Beacon Project, which focuses on partnering with contractors to achieve carbon reduction in large infrastructure projects. The sector can also start using a new Contract Partnering Agreement. This puts the Accord principles into your contract negotiations to ensure a positive relationship between parties and ensure contracts are set up to succeed while supporting the vision of the Accord.
Reducing carbon in construction - the Watercare Beacon Project
We are excited to share our first Beacon Project – Watercare’s carbon reduction in infrastructure construction.
‘Beacon Projects’ is a major workstream in the Construction Sector Transformation Plan, designed to lift performance in certain areas of the sector. Selected real-life projects will be used to showcase innovation and demonstrate how Accord principles can be put into practice that others can learn from. They might be whole construction projects, parts of projects, or just new approaches to problems that can be shared with the sector to speed up positive change to transform the sector.
New Zealand’s largest water and wastewater company Watercare is working with its construction partners to build better infrastructure using their innovative ‘Enterprise Model’. The model has a combined focus on reducing carbon emissions and construction costs whilst also improving health and safety and wellbeing. This Beacon Project examines how the model has been designed to focus all parties on meeting these objectives.
The sector can learn a lot from this project, and we are proud to share it with you.
Putting the Accord principles into practice with a new Contract Partnering Agreement
It’s now easier to put the Accord principles into practice with a new Partnering Agreement developed by the Accord. This sets out how parties can work together to follow the Construction Sector Accord principles and contribute to the Accord outcomes.
The agreement can be used by clients and contractors at the outset of contract negotiations to set out the behaviours and principles that should guide their relationship through the life of the project. The document sets expectations for how parties will behave in regards to risk allocation, payments, people, health/safety/wellbeing, and the environment.
The Accord encourages both public and private parties entering into new contracts to use the exemplar agreement to support positive relationships and a successful project.
