Prefab delivers the WOW Factor
A stunning holiday home in a remote part of the country has recently been declared a winner. Judged for the 2017 Waikato-Bay of Plenty NZIA Architecture Awards, this project in the Coromandel Peninsula was announced a winner in the Housing Category.
Quoted in the awards that this home “redefines how bespoke and prefab can co-exist within residential design”, it demonstrates how prefabrication techniques can deliver real value. PrefabNZ Member Stanley Group utilised offsite prefabrication in conjunction with conventional onsite building techniques to deliver a clever solution.
Prefabrication provided real savings in both time and sub-trades. Various components, including bathroom and ensuite pods were constructed in a factory environment then transported to site. They arrived complete with linings and plumbing fixtures, which allowed for more control over the homes construction. Prefabricated walls were manufactured in modular sections, aluminium joinery was installed into the frames, and majority of the Lawson’s Cyprus timber exterior cladding was installed in the factory controlled environment. Given that the location was isolated, and with limited access to personnel in the Coromandel where building is busy, offsite prefabrication assisted in largely eliminating this issue. Coupled with the Stanley team’s usual clever thinking, this project was completed 30% faster than conventional construction, much to the clients delight.
