Site visit to Unitec Student Hub - largest development in inner Auckland
In the first stage of a major campus redevelopment, Unitec has had the Hub at their Mt Albert campus redesigned to reflect the heart of a world-class campus, and to support a more modern teaching and learning experience, fitting of a modern 21st century Institute of Technology.
The Tomberlab glulam diagonal timber grid supporting a new high-level, 65m x 35m roof and living green wall is an interesting demonstration of engineered timber in a commercial sized building.
The new main space will be triple-height, enclosed by richly textured walls and opening out to the east to the green outdoors through a large glazed wall.
The new hub will be a modern and flexible place where students and staff can gather, study, seek support or relax. It will be a world-class student gathering and learning environment, and will promote a blend of online, face-to-face and collaborative learning.
There will be a mix of spaces, ranging from café-style open environments merging with collaborative study areas, semi-enclosed library spaces, study pods overlooking the main space, and enclosed study and meeting rooms.
