Nomination for PrefabNZ Board: Guy Marriage, First Light Studio & VUW
Guy Marriage is a 'prac-ademic’, with a foot planted firmly in both fields. He constantly questions and publicly challenges the status quo of NZ building rules, standards and construction methodologies be it student education or as an industry provocateur. Guy is intelligent, charismatic, argumentative, patient and wise, and these qualities, along with his employment and experience portfolio make him ideal for a position on the PrefabNZ board.
Wearing his academic hat, he is an inspiring lecturer, very involved in the life of the university and genuinely interested in student education and the furthering of the body of knowledge surrounding architectural construction, urban design and building performance. Wearing his practical practice hat, he is one-fifth of First Light Studio Ltd, a design-led architectural practice which focuses on compact, sustainable residential and small-scale commercial design. First Light’s international competition background means that all members of the practice are invested in developing NZ’s potential for prefabricated construction, especially in the medium-density residential sector, for which there is both a great need and a great deficit of good quality stock.
In his spare time, Guy is an active activist in the architectural community, regularly contributing to local and national public events (member of NZIA Wellington Branch, guest juror for NZIA Awards, support speaker at NZIA/City Gallery City Talks, previous key member in the architecture centre, recent participant in Grand Designs New Zealand...) And publications such as Architecture NZ, Home NZ, Idealog, Architecture Now, ANZASCA, SAHANZ, BRANZ...
Current and previous roles:
- Director of First Light Studio Ltd, Wellington
- Director of Building Science, VUW
- Senior Lecturer in Architecture, VUW
- Studio Pacific Architecture, Wellington
- Custance, Wellington
- Architect, Foster+Partners, London
