115 Taranaki Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011Makers of Architecture designs, Makers Fabrication builds. Together the Makers team work to deliver beautiful architectural buildings using technological design, fabrication and construction efficiencies. Makers of Architecture are a process based design company that research through design testing at many scales, to both improve and develop new methods of designing and making buildings.
Makers of Architecture formed Makers Fabrication, a building company to facilitate their mode of working while also stimulating the opportunity for others to explore design making. The Makers Fabrication workshop allows for flexible prefabricated systems to be manufactured and further developed ensuring all components are assembled in a protected and controlled environment before being shipped to site for assembly. This adds quality assurance to the process and outcome.
Their system consists of a plywood cassette based design and fabrication system to work in conjunction with XLam's structural Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) product. Together they are assembled much like a jigsaw puzzle where the building components fit together seamlessly. Makers of Architecture utilises Building Information Modelling (BIM) in conjunction with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, allowing almost any imaginable building form to be created efficiently, accurately, and sustainably.
Makers of Architecture are always looking to learn more, find a better way and engage with inter-disciplinary research to better design potentials and solutions. The Makers of Architecture team were recent winners at the 2015 Canterbury Architecture Awards for their Warrander Studio project - New Zealand's first full CLT (cross laminated timber) house. They also gained an award for the same project at the 2015 NZ Wood Timber Design Awards.
